Cameras with integrated image processing electronics (smart cameras) and image processing software for external PCs are available for a wide range of applications and monitoring tasks. The ideal system for each application depends on the type of application. All camera systems are suitable for use in different industrial sectors and have proven their worth in tough industrial environments
Smart camera with integrated image processing electronics
The smart camera's internal image processing technology processes and transmits image data to a process monitoring system. When using a smart camera, no additional external computer is required. This is especially helpful for applications that do not lend themselves to the installation of external PCs in the immediate vicinity of production facilities, or installations which require complex or expensive cabling. The smart camera contains no serviceable parts or components that are prone to interference, such as switchboards or data cards, making it an ideal and inexpensive solution for industrial environments.
Cameras with PC-based image processing
Cameras with PC-based image processing transmit image data to an external computer which processes the data. Cameras with PC-based image processing are ideally suited for complex installations or application specific-conditions that require additional processing power. The external computer can control multiple cameras simultaneously and may perform additional tasks such as saving or transferring data.
In addition, PC processors can be selected based on the required computing and image processing time. Choosing a powerful PC with increased computing power can significantly speed up image processing time. Moreover, the choice of an adequate operating system allows for efficient programming. Computing tasks can run in parallel and in real-time. The graphical user interface enables a flexible design and can be customized to the client's needs.
Hyperspectral imaging offers a wide range of applications for identifying material composition and process conformity.
Hyperspectral imaging extends the application range of grayscale and color cameras. Hyperspectral cameras record over 100 different wavelengths, covering a much broader color spectrum from UV to infrared light. The ability to visualize the infrared spectrum enables the precise identification of specific material signatures or "material fingerprinting". As a result, materials can be clearly identified and classified based on their chemical composition.
Typical applications: Food industry, woodworking industry, mining and raw materials industry

Hyperspectral imaging:
Hyperspectral cameras significantly extend the range of traditional imaging applications
In addition, new technologies, such as hyperspectral imaging, assist in complying with new or changing industrial requirements. They significantly speed up analyses, enable repeatable measurements and use durable components that withstand even harsh industrial conditions.
While conventional camera technology is used to optimize and shorten automated production and maintenance processes and increase the quality, productivity and safety of production-related manual and visual inspection and measurement tasks, there are certain industries where grayscale or color cameras are simply unable to achieve the desired results, for example, when it comes to visually differentiating substances with seemingly identical colors or textures. Hyperspectral imaging enables you to handle a variety of novel testing and measurement tasks that allow you to strategically position your business for the future.
Wherever conventional image processing systems are unable to provide detailed material analyses, hyperspectral imaging offers an entire range of new possibilities, for example, in the food and commodities or the automotive industries.
Analyzable images of shiny and reflective surfaces
Photometric stereo is a method of analyzing and detailing the contour and reflectivity of a surface in three-dimensional space.
This method involves shining an external light source on a surface and capturing images with a 2D camera under a variety of lighting conditions based on the resulting illumination scenarios. The images are then combined to create a height profile based on the shadows obtained under the different lighting conditions. This profile enables the identification of surface irregularities, such as subtle scratches and dull spots. It provides significant benefits compared to conventional imaging techniques that can cause reflections that make it impossible to identify surface irregularities.
Deflectometry is another contact-free method for capturing and measuring reflective surfaces. With this method, a striped, elliptical or checkered pattern is projected on a surface. The reflections of these patterns are subsequently analyzed for deviations to detect surface defects. Deflectometry enables customers to check shiny or reflective surfaces for damages in a wide range of industries, for example in the glass, metal, automotive or consumer goods industries.
Conventional imaging techniques can cause reflections that do not allow for the identification of surface scratches or dull spots.
Deflectometry and photometric stereo are two different methods for creating analyzable images of shiny or reflective surfaces for the purpose of evaluating the surface quality of materials such as metals or plastics. The method used depends on the task at hand and the process parameters.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE – MACHINE LEARNING – DEEP LEARNING – DATA MINING
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Artificial intelligence algorithms enable camera systems to learn from samples. Based on large volumes of recorded and analyzed data modern machine learning algorithms help to continuously improve the evaluation of quality-related properties. The obtained data can subsequently be used for further processing and analysis.
Machine Learning / Deep Learning
Enables your imaging processes system to make smart decisions. Deep learning algorithms enable a fast and efficient classification of recorded pictures. Using taught-in templates of acceptable/unacceptable parts a deep learning system automatically recognizes any deviations to ensure that damaged manufacturing parts can be automatically identified and removed from production.
Data Mining
PSI Technics image processing systems enable the recording and structuring of vast amounts of data that in turn translates into technological, safety-related or economic benefit for customers. For instance, data mining can be used to identify creeping wear proactively at an early stage to schedule preventive maintenance, to prevent downtimes and to increase machine availability.
